A Community with Deep Roots

Boonton Township was created on April 11, 1867 from portions of Pequannock Township. Mountain Lakes later became a separate borough in 1924.

Settlement in the Rockaway Valley reaches back into the early 1700s. Farms, early roads and the Morris Canal shaped the community for generations. Powerville Road followed an important canal corridor, and the historic Powerville Hotel served canal and transient traffic.

In the 20th century, Boonton Township became associated with pioneering radio and aviation research. Radio Frequency Laboratories and Aircraft Radio Corporation helped establish the township as an important center for communications technology, with aviation figures including Jimmy Doolittle connected to local research activity.

Tourne County Park

Tourne County Park is a major Morris County outdoor destination along the township's southern edge. The park encompasses more than 550 acres and offers an extensive trail system through forests, wetlands, streams and wildflower areas.
